One of the best ways to experience and learn more about what living in community means, is visiting them.
Eugenie lives in a straw bale house in a small co-housing community in the inner city area of Victoria Park (Perth, WA). The development is called Genesis. Genesis is a multi-award winning project developed by The Green Swing team. Eugenie is one of the co-founders. She regularly conducts tours of her home and surrounds for interested people and groups.
Green Fabric can also organise custom tours of other co-operative living projects and developments upon request.
The nature of a co-operative living project is that the future owners and residents become the developer. This does not mean, however, that you need to know or do everything yourself. These days, professional support is available. It makes sense to build a team around of you of people that can help. Similar to an owner builder project, there are benefits in engaging trades for the site works, plumbing, electricity and the like. The support of an experienced team can prove crucial and fast-track your group plans for and realization of a your co-operative living dream. The team at Green Fabric are here to help you manage the process efficiently and effectively.
Our support can be as little as being your mentor. Working with a mentor can keep you focused and make your efforts more efficient. We can refer you to businesses, key contacts or relevant sources of information. We will help you with research and technical advice, and develop a schedule of meetings or calls to make sure you get the support you need.
We can also take on more responsibility in a consulting or project management capacity.
Support for Government, Housing provides, and other stakeholders
In some local council areas in Germany 30-40% of new projects now follow the co-operative or Baugruppen model. There are many benefits of the co-operative building projects, including sustainability, affordability and community. Co-operative housing can prove an essential tool to create more affordable homes, develop skills and create local employment while at the same time delivering superior sustainability and community outcomes.
In Europe, councils and housing providers actively facilitate and support collective building groups. There is also growing interest here in Australia. Examples include the City of Fremantle who invited Expressions of Interest to develop a cooperative housing project on land they own at 7 Quarry St. WA state developer Landcorp also included a Baugruppen demonstration project as part of the award winning WGV development near Fremantle.
We believe it will not take long before other progressive local councils and housing providers to follow the lead.
With collective experience in planning, designing and building these projects, our team can assist and guide local government officials, housing providers and other stake holders on how to support and facilitate the trend towards co-operative housing.
Promote your idea or project
Co-operative living projects comes about by people, for people. A key characteristic is that future owners and residents are involved in a project, from the start. Green Fabric provides a platform where co-operative living projects and ideas are given a voice, to facilitate and bring together people and places, to create co-operative living opportunities and projects together. Green Fabric is your platform to reach out to like-minded people.
We want to hear from you if you have an idea, opportunity, property or land for a co-operative living project and help you share it with the world. An important step in the co-operative housing journey is to share your idea and story with others. Get in touch!
